Bernedoodle Coat Colors

Bernedoodle coat colors

One thing that we love the most about Bernedoodles is the wide variety of coat colors that the puppies come in. Their wavy and curly hypoallergenic, low-shedding coat yields some of the most beautiful colors you’ll see of any dog breed, including Blue Merle, Traditional Tri-Color, Red, Red/White, Chocolate Merle, Black/White, Phantom, and more. The coat colors of our puppies vary depending on the specific breeding and genetics of the parents. Coat color is one of the biggest factors in pricing each puppy here at Happily Ever After Doodles. As such, more rare coat and eye colorations will be priced accordingly.

Let’s discuss the many different variations of coat color to expect in a Bernedoodle. First, we’ll go over the most common Bernedoodle coat colors, and then we’ll cover some of the more rare ones.

Traditional Tri-Color

The Traditional Tri-Color coat, which is primarily Black, White, and Tan is the most common color you’ll see in Bernedoodle puppies. The black colors are typically seen on the back and head, while white is predominately on the underside, paws, muzzle, and forehead. Tan is the accent color, and is typically seen above the eyes, on the face, and on the legs.

These beautiful colors are very standard for this designer breed and originate from their Bernese Mountain dog parent. A healthy Traditional Tri-Color Bernedoodle puppy will have a sleek and shiny coat that makes the black, white, and tan markings pop.

The Traditional Tri-Color Bernedoodle puppy is a great choice if you’re looking for a canine companion with the exact colors of the Bernese, while also benefitting from the spunky personality and hypoallergenic and wavy or curly coat of the Poodle. Happily Ever After Doodles breeds Traditional Tri-Color puppies – in fact, they are our most popular coat coloration besides the Blue Merle. If you’re looking for a classic coloration, check out our current litters here.

Traditional Tri-Color

Blue Merle Tri-Color

Of all the Merle patterns you’ll see on Bernedoodles, the most popular is the Blue Merle, or Blue Merle Tri-Color coat (when there are three colors present). As their name implies, the Blue Merle is characterized by the dominant mottled bluish-gray coat with dark spots, accents of white on the forehead, muzzle, and underside, and tan spots as the third accent color. Other merle coat patterns similar to the Blue Merle include the Chocolate Merle and Sable Merle which are more brown or reddish in hue.

Blue Merle Bernedoodle puppies are a bit more rare than their Traditional Tri-Color counterparts. They require selected breeding and care to produce the highly desired coloration that many to-be Bernedoodle owners are looking for.

One standout feature of the Blue Merle Bernedoodle is that it will often be born with blue eyes – these are highly sought after by dog owners looking for a beautiful blue-eyed companion. Coat coloration and eye color are two factors that contribute to pricing our Bernedoodles.

Blue Merle

Chocolate Tri-Color

The Chocolate Tri-Color is more rare than the Traditional Tri-Color, but is a highly sought-after variation due to its softer, “chocolate” appearance. These puppies have a dominant brown coloration, with white on the forehead, muzzle, underside, and paws, and accent tan coloration above the eyes, face, and legs. Chocolate Tri-Color newborns may appear alongside their Traditional Tri-Color brothers and sisters.

Similar to Chocolate Tri-Color is Chocolate and White (or Brown and White). This is a common bi-color variation seen in Bernedoodle breeding. Other Bernedoodle puppies may have a Parti coat pattern, which means that the body is mostly white with a few patches of brown.

Meanwhile, other puppies will come in an attractive Chocolate Merle or Chocolate Tri-Color Merle, which is a mottled merle with chocoloate colorations. Contact us to find out more information on Chocolate Tri-Color puppies.

Chocolate Tri-Color

Black & White Bi-Color

While many Bernedoodles will be born with a Tri-Color coat, it’s not uncommon to see Bi-Colors also. Black and White is a standard color combo for many dog breeds. Border Collies, Boston Terriers, Dalmatians, Portuguese Water Dogs, Newfoundlands, and Great Danes come to mind. With Poodle genetics leaving the door open for so many color variations, breeders may have several black and white puppies in their litter.

As their name implies, a Black and White Bernedoodle puppy will be mainly black, with white on their forehead, muzzle, chest area, legs, and paws. They also may have a slight trace of brown (or tan) in their coat, although these colors are not usually as dynamic as on a Traditional Tri-Color puppy. Some Black and White Bernedoodles will have a Parti coat pattern, which means that they will appear mostly white with some black patches.

Interested in investing in a Bernedoodle puppy with a black and white coat? The Black and White Bernedoodle will make a loving companion for anyone looking for a unique, wavy, or curly-coated companion!

Black/White

Chocolate & White Bi-Color

The Bernedoodle is no stranger to Bi-Colors, and another color combination you will likely see in your online search is the Chocolate and White or Brown and White Berndoodle. Coat variations of these colors include mostly Brown and White, Parti (mostly white with brown patches), or Chocolate Merle. These dogs either lack the tan seen in Tri-Color individuals, or have just traces of tan in their coat.

Chocolate Bernedoodles can also have a Brindle pattern. Brindle in dog coats refers to a “striped” pattern (darker pigment on a lighter color) that stays present when the dog grows from puppy to adult.

If you’re looking for a puppy with a unique Chocolate and White Bi-Color combination, contact Happily Ever After Doodles and our team can put you on the waitlist for the perfect puppy!

Chocolate/White

Gray & White Bi-Color

Gray and White are common colors for the Poodle, so it’s not uncommon to see these beautiful colors show up in their offspring as well. Puppies with Gray and White as their main coat coloration can also tend to have blue eyes too, which is highly sought after by Bernedoodle to-be owners.

As their name implies, Gray & White Bi-Color Bernedoodle puppies will have a predominant gray coloration, with white as the secondary color on the forehead, muzzle, chest area, legs, paws, and sometimes tail. Eye colors can be either blue or brown.

Common variations on a Gray and White Bi-Color Bernedoodle include mostly gray with white underside, as a Parti, which is mostly white with gray patches, Blue-Grayish Merle, or even gray, white, and a little bit of tan. If you’re looking for a Gray and White coat, contact Happily Ever After Doodles and our team will be happy to help match you to the right Bernedoodle companion!

Gray/White

Black Phantom

Black and tan colorations are common in many other types of dog breeds – from the Doberman, to the Coonhound. But did you know that it’s also a common color in the Bernedoodle?

The Black Phantom coloration refers to a coat type that’s almost entirely black and tan, which unlike the Traditional Tri-Color variant, has very little to no white at all. Phantom puppies can be Black Phantom, Chocolate Phantom, or a Phantom Merle with a mottled coat. Sometimes puppies with this coloration may fade or lighten as they reach adulthood.

If you’re looking for a unique coat combination, Happily Ever After Doodles has you covered! We carefully breed puppies to result in color combinations that dog owners will love.

Black Phantom

Chocolate Phantom

Some Phantom puppies will be predominately brown and tan, and even all-brown. This is what we call the Chocolate Phantom. Some individuals will also be born with a little white also, but not enough white to be considered a Tri-Color dog. It’s important to note that your Chocolate Phantom puppy’s coat may change over time as they reach adulthood.

Chocolate puppies are a popular choice, and it’s no wonder why. The warm, brown colors are beautiful to look at. Brown and Brown Phantom are not uncommon in the Poodle, and are endearing when those coat colors are passed onto their Bernedoodle offspring.

Chocolate Phantom

Chocolate Merle Tri-Color

Another beautiful Merle combination – the Chocolate Merle Tri-Color, or simply, the Chocolate Merle, is another great choice. Some puppies will not only be born with a Tri-Color palette of Brown, White, and Tan, but also attractive mottled or merle patterns. This coat coloration is a little less common than the Blue Merle, but is nonetheless a beautiful alternative. A similar coat variation is the Red Merle, which is a little warmer than the Chocolate Merle.

If you’re considering a Bernedoodle to be your new dog companion, it’s worth noting that a Chocolate Merle’s coat may change in color over time from puppy to adult. For example, they can range from a warm brown to a cooler gray color. This is known as the “fading gene” which refers to a genetic trait inherited from their Poodle parent which can lighten the coat to gray as the dog matures.

Chocolate Merle

Red & White Bi-Color

A common Bi-Color combination often seen in the Bernedoodle is Red and White. This can be a mostly reddish-brown dog with a white forehead, muzzle, underside, and paws, or a Parti that is mostly white with some red patches.

Merle or Brindle colors are also color possibilities with the Red and White Bernedoodle. Your red and white Bernedoodle may have traces of brown or gray also.

Coat colors can range from a rich, dark red to a light, almost cream color. In fact, your puppy may be red at a young age but their coat may lighten over time.

Red/White

Yellow & White Bi-Color

One of the lightest color combinations is the Bi-Color Yellow and White Bernedoodle. These pups may bear close resemblance to a Goldendoodle, or can be a bit of a darker, more red appearance. Yellow and white puppies can have a pink, brown, or black nose.

The lightest individuals can be a Parti (mostly white with yellow or light red patches), or can be almost completely white in color. Thanks to the genetics of their Poodle parents, any color combination is possible!

Yellow/White

Black Merle Tri-Color

When you think of a Black Merle dog, the Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Catahoula Leopard Dogs, and Cardigan Welsh Corgis may come to mind. But Black Merle also occurs in Bernedoodle puppies too.

Black Merle Tri-Color or Black Merle Bernedoodles are very similar to their Blue Merle counterparts. These dogs will be characterized with large, dark or black patches on lighter gray, with a white underside, and may or may not have tan markings also. Black Merle puppies may have brown or blue eyes.

As we mentioned earlier, other common merle colorations include Blue, Red, Chocolate/Brown, and Sable. If you’re interested in obtaining a Merle Bernedoodle, contact our team today.

Black Merle

Sable Merle Tri-Color

Lastly is the Sable Merle Tri-Color Bernedoodle. Sable has a “muddy” look, and is what we call a coat that has hints of a brown, red, orange, black, or silver-gray hue. Bernedoodle puppies can range from almost a complete sable coat, to a sable and white coat, to a sable merle coat. When it comes to Merle color combinations, we’ve got you covered!
