15 Nov Micro, Mini, Moyen & Standard: Bernedoodle Sizes Explained
As you’ve researched shopping a hybrid breed online, chances are you’ve run across the playful and affectionate Bernedoodle. This hybrid mix is the perfect family dog, with many benefits over purebred breeds, including having a beautiful coat with many possible color variations that’s also hypoallergenic and low-shedding.
4 Bernedoodle Sizes
This beautiful mix of the smart Miniature or Standard Poodle and the gentle Bernese Mountain Dog results in an intelligent, goofy, and loving dog that comes in four different sizes:
Even though you’ve narrowed your choices down to a Bernedoodle, you may be wondering which type to get. You may have heard of the terms “F1” and “F1b,” “mini,” “moyen,” etc., and maybe you’re not sure what they all mean.
In this article, we’ll talk about the four different Bernedoodle sizes and which will likely be the best choice for you and your family:
1. Micro/Toy
As you can imagine, the Micro or Toy Bernedoodle is the smallest Bernedoodle size you can purchase, and is the offspring of either:
1.) a Mini or Toy Poodle crossed with an F1 Mini Bernedoodle,
2.) a Toy Poodle crossed with a Mini Bernedoodle, or
3.) two Micro Bernedoodles bred together.
A full grown Micro Bernedoodle will stand at a height of under 18 inches and weigh approximately anywhere between 10 to 24 pounds. If you’re looking for a smaller companion with a balance of high energy and affection, the Micro Bernedoodle will be the perfect fit!
2. Mini
Standing slightly taller and weighing slightly more is the Mini Bernedoodle. The Mini Bernedoodle results from crossbreeding a Miniature Poodle and a Bernese Mountain dog.
Mini Bernedoodles will either be an F1 or an F1b Mini – this refers to either a first-generation mix between a MIniature Poodle and Bernese Mountain dog, or a backcross between a F1 Mini Bernedoodle and a Poodle (usually a Miniature Poodle).
An F1b Mini Bernedoodle (or second-generation mix) will likely have a more low-shedding and hypoallergenic coat. Their coat will also be more curly. This is the advantage of backcrossing to a Poodle that many breeders and dog owners prefer if shedding or allergies are a concern.
A full grown Mini Bernedoodle will be approximately 18 to 22 inches tall and will weigh between 25 to 49 pounds.
3. Moyen/Medium
The Moyen or Medium Bernedoodle is usually the offspring you get when you cross a medium or smaller-sized Standard Poodle with a Bernese Mountain dog. Sometimes Moyen Bernedoodles will be bred via mixing a first-generation small to medium F1 Bernedoodle and a smaller Standard Poodle.
The Moyen Bernedoodle is a great alternative if you’re looking for a dog that’s not quite a large as the Standard.
A full grown Moyen or Medium Bernedoodle will be approximately 18 to 26 inches tall and will weigh between 40 to 70 pounds.
4. Standard
Lastly is the Standard Bernedoodle size. This taller and heavier dog will have all the personality and spunk of a Standard Poodle and the gentle nature of a Bernese Mountain dog. As their name implies, the Standard Bernedoodle is bred from the Standard Poodle and the Bernese Mountain dog. This dog will require lots of space in your yard to play, train, and enjoy the great outdoors.
A full grown Standard Bernedoodle will usually stand at 23 to 29 inches tall and will weigh anywhere between 70 to 90+ pounds.
Bernedoodle Sizes: In Summary
If you’re considering getting a Bernedoodle, it’s important to discuss your size preferences with a reputable breeder to find the right fit for your lifestyle. You should also consider coat colors, training, and more before taking your Bernedoodle companion home.
