How to potty train

Potty training your Bernedoodle puppy takes consistency, patience, and a predictable routine. Young puppies are still developing bladder control, so accidents are normal at first. The goal is to help your puppy understand where you want them to go while making successful potty trips easy to repeat.

1. Establish a routine: Take your puppy outside regularly throughout the day. Potty breaks are especially important first thing in the morning, after meals or drinking, after naps, after playtime, and immediately before bedtime.

2. Choose a designated potty spot: Take your puppy to the same general area each time. Using a consistent location can help your puppy learn what is expected when you go outside.

3. Reward success immediately: Praise your puppy and offer a small treat as soon as they finish going potty outside. Positive reinforcement helps your Bernedoodle associate going in the correct place with a reward.

4. Learn your puppy’s signals: Watch for behaviors such as sniffing the floor, circling, wandering away from play, pacing, or suddenly becoming restless. When you notice these signs, take your puppy outside right away.

5. Supervise closely indoors: Until your puppy is reliably potty trained, keep them where you can watch them. Preventing accidents is much easier than correcting a habit after it develops.

6. Handle accidents calmly: Accidents will happen during potty training. Avoid scolding or frightening your puppy. Instead, clean the area thoroughly and focus on giving them more opportunities to succeed outside.

7. Use the crate as part of your routine: A properly sized crate can be a helpful potty training tool because most puppies naturally prefer not to soil their sleeping area. How long does potty training take?

Every puppy develops at a different pace. Some Bernedoodles understand the basic routine quickly but may still have occasional accidents as they mature.
