16 Dec What Makes a Bernedoodle the Perfect Family Dog?
Many pet owners love an active, playful, and intelligent breed like the Poodle, while others prefer the loving and gentle spirit of the Bernese Mountain Dog. But what if you blended these two beloved breeds together?
Introducing the Bernedoodle, a friendly and playful hybrid breed with a hypoallergenic, wavy or curly coat with many beautiful color variations. Let’s talk a little more indepth about why Bernedoodles are becoming an increasingly more popular choice for families. Below are seven reasons why you should choose a Bernedoodle to be your new family pet:
1. Great Temperament
A “ball of energy” is a good term to describe a Bernedoodle. This hybrid breed is known for its friendly and affectionate nature, making them great companions and family pets. When you choose the Bernedoodle, you can expect an loving, goofy, and intelligent breed that enjoys activities, training, and being in the center of attention.
Mental and physical stimulation is important for preventing boredom or social anxiety. Thanks to their people-oriented nature, these dogs are the best match for families with someone to interact with them consistently. A Bernedoodle with a higher percentage of Poodle will likely be a more lively dog, and likewise, an individual a higher percentage of Bernese Mountain Dog will be more mellow.
However, it’s important to note that individual temperament and characteristics can vary, so thorough research and choosing a reputable breeder are crucial when considering a Bernedoodle as a companion for your family. If you have questions about the individual personality of your Bernedoodle puppy, Happily Ever After Doodles can help.
2. Low-Shedding Coat
If you love the look and personality of the beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, but are concerned about the amount of shedding, it may be worth considering the Bernedoodle instead. These crossbreeds tend to shed less than their purebred Bernese Mountain Dog parent, thanks to the genetics of the Miniature or Standard Poodle, which are known for their low-shedding coats.
If you or someone in your family has allergies, the Bernedoodle is one of the best breeds you can adopt into your family. While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, this mix will shed much less when compared with other breeds.
2. Size Variability
Bernedoodles come in different sizes, so you can find one that fits your living space and lifestyle. You’ve likely researched Bernedoodles already and are wondering what the difference is between them.
The Bernedoodle comes in 4 types: Micro, Mini, Moyen (or Medium), and Standard. Crossing a Toy or Miniature Poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog will result in Micro or Mini Bernedoodle offspring. Crossing a Standard Poodle with a Bernese Dog Mountain Dog will result in Moyen or Standard puppies.
Another factor in the size of your Bernedoodle companion has to do with the generation of dog you adopt. An F1 Standard Bernedoodle, or a first-generation, 50% Standard Poodle and 50% Bernese Mountain Dog, tend to be the largest and heaviest dogs. F1B dogs are backcrossed to Poodle and a typically smaller and lighter, thanks to being 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese. F2 Dogs and Multi-Gen dogs have unpredictable sizing, and depend on the genetics of their parents.
We discuss more about Bernedoodle sizes in our article linked here.
4. A Variety of Coat Colors
One of the main reasons why dog lovers choose the Bernedoodle over other mixes is thanks to their wide variety of coats. The Bernese Mountain dog parent has a beautiful, Tri-Color coat, with black, white, and tan colorations – however, it’s the Poodle that offers so much diversity in terms of coat colors, including Black, White, Silver, Brown/Chocolate, Red, Blue, and Apricot.
Depending on the coloration of their Poodle parent, your Bernedoodle puppy’s coat can result in Solid, Merle, and Phantom colorations. As you shop for Bernedoodle puppies online, you will see many coat color patterns to choose from, including Black Tri-Color, Chocolate Tri-Color, Black Merle Tri-Color, Chocolate Merle Tri-Color, Blue Merle Tri-Color, Sable, Brindle, Phantom, Black Bi-Color, Chocolate Bi-Color, Red Bi-Color, and more. Each puppy will have a wavy, curly, or straight coat.
Currently, Happily Ever After Doodles focuses on breeding happy and healthy Traditional Tri-Color and Merle puppies. We discuss more about Bernedoodle coat colors in our article here.
5. High Intelligence
Highly intelligent, thanks to their Poodle or Poodle mix parents, the Bernedoodle is the perfect choice if you want a dog that responds well to obedience training and positive reinforcement. In fact, the Bernedoodle’s intelligence makes it among the best breeds for training as service dogs or therapy dogs.
They can be a smart yet stubborn breed. However, with a little patience, your puppy will pick up new tricks with ease. Core training principles include positive reinforcement, consistency, short training sessions, and establishing leadership right away. Key areas of training include potty training, crate training, basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “down”; leash training, addressing nipping/biting, and socialization.

6. Better Overall Health
Due to genetic diversity in crossing breeds, your Bernedoodle will be a lot less likely to develop health issues more common to pedigree breeds, which means they also tend to have longer lifespans. For instance, Bernedoodles may be less susceptible to cancer or heart conditions.
The most common health problems that may arise in a Berendoodle are hip and elbow dysplasia, food, environmental, or skin allergies; eye problems such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy, or bloat (GDV), which occurs in deep-chested dogs.
When searching for a new canine companion, it’s always worth looking for reputable breeders who perform genetic testing and health screening. At Happily Ever After Doodles, our breeders focus on each puppy’s health, temparment, and care and perform thorough health testing to ensure a happy and healthy puppy for your home.
7. Great Adaptability
Bernedoodles can adapt to various living environments. Their versatility allows them to fit well in both active and calmer homes. Whether you have a large yard for them to play and run around in, or you walk them frequently, even with their need for moderate levels of exercise, they still love to cuddle up with their owners on the couch.
A social dog, they are a great breed for children, other dogs, cats, and other smaller pets. If you’re looking for a family dog that will love you for many years to come, you really can’t go wrong with the Bernedoodle – and Happily Ever After Doodles can help match you to the perfect pup!
