What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is a mixed-breed dog that’s a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They are known for their friendly and intelligent nature, as well as their wavy or curly coat, is low to non shedding and hypoallergenic.

Energy Level


Energy Level Moderate to high energy - requires 1-2 walks daily.

 

Your Bernedoodle puppy will have medium to high levels of energy. They are a very playful and trainable breed, so plan on lots of playtime in the backyard and taking them on 1–2 daily walks (or scheduling time for equivalent exercise).

 

Plenty of exercise will help keep your Bernedoodle puppy calm and well-behaved.

Grooming


Grooming Wavy-to-curly coats that require 2-3 weekly brushes.

 

Your Bernedoodle will have a wavy or curly coat which will require regular brushing using a slicker brush, pin brush, and metal comb to work out any tangles or mats. You'll also want to bathe your companion every 4 to 6 weeks using a dog-friendly shampoo.

 

You can also schedule a routine professional grooming session to keep your dog feeling his or her best!

Shedding


Shedding Level Low-shedding and low-allergen coat.

 

The Bernedoodle is known to have a coat that sheds very little, making it a great choice if you want a dog with a low shedding coat. They are also known to have hypoallergenic or low-allergenic coats. This is thanks to the genetics of their Poodle parents, who are known for and often bred for their low-shedding and hypoallergenic coats.

 

It's important to note that the shedding level varies from individual to individual. As such, the shedding level of your Bernedoodle puppy will ultimately depend on his or her coat type and genetics.

Health & Care

Typically, Bernedoodle puppies should eat 3-4 meals a day and adult Bernedoodles should eat 2 meals a day. You will need to check dietary specifications with your veterinarian based on the age and health of your companion.

 

While the Bernedoodle has few health issues compared to many breeds, this mix can develop hip or elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, or allergies.

Lifespan

 

Lifespan A healthy hybrid breed with a long lifespan.


The lifespan of your Bernedoodle companion depends on the type. Smaller dogs such as the Micro and Mini Bernedoodle have a longer life expectancy, and tend to live 14-18 years.

 

The medium-sized Moyen Bernedoodle has a life expectancy of between 13-16 years. The largest type of Bernedoodle, the Standard, tends to live between 12-15 years.

Coat Color Variations


Coat A breed of many colors.

 

Bernedoodle puppies can have many different colorations. Common color variations of this hybrid breed include Merle and Traditional Tri-Color (black, white, and tan).

 

Other colorations are Brown Tri-Color, Golden/Red and White, Phantom (Traditional and Merle), Bi-Colored, Sable, Merle Sable, Chocolate Merle, Blue Merle, Brindle, and Majority White.

Size & Generation


Sizes Micro, Mini, Moyen/Medium, and Standard Bernedoodle.

 

There are 4 types of Bernedoodle, determined by their Miniature or Standard Poodle to Bernese Mountain Dog percentage. The smallest type is the Micro Bernedoodle, which weighs around 10-25 pounds. A little larger are Mini Bernedoodles, which can weigh between 24 and 40 pounds. Moyen Bernedoodles weigh around 35 to 60 pounds. Lastly, the largest type, the Standard Bernedoodle, can weigh anywhere from 50 to 110 pounds.

 

Bernedoodle generation (F1, F1B, F2, and Multi-Gen) refers to the amount of Poodle genetics present in the offspring. F1 refers to the first generation - a puppy that is half Poodle and half Bernese Mountain Dog. F1B is a backcrossed dog, which means that it is 75% Poodle and 25% Bernese. F2 refers to the offspring of two F1 dogs. Multi-Gen dogs are offspring that have more Poodle bred into them, to keep the breed as allergy-friendly as possible.
